This is a basic guide for setting up your fuel system. This is an area where people often go wrong, which can be expensive as changes to the fuel system can mean the tune has to be started again!
All information provided here is based on our experience and opinions. We recommend you talk to your tuner of choice before you purchase any parts to make sure that it suits your setup.
Fuel system
The fuel system is an important part of your EFI system, Modification of your fuel system should not be taken lightly, uneducated or done rough. An issue here can cost you an engine, or cause a fire! When correctly setup it will give you a great result, without wasting time and money. The fuel system is sensitive and is easily affected. Almost anything you do to it, from changing your fuel filter, to rewiring your fuel pump, to upgraded fuel pumps.
Fuel pressure is affected the most noticeably by changes. Fuel pressure affects everything, from fuel pump flow, Injector Flow, Injector dead time etc. Most factory and aftermarket Japanese Fuel pressure regulators are 1:1 rising rate. What this means is that for every 1psi of boost you make, there is 1psi extra fuel pressure. With most factory regs running around 3-3.5bar fuel pressure at atmospheric pressure.
Note: Most stock EFI systems will NOT run safely, with larger injectors, increase fuel pressure.

There is a few questions to think about before you spend your hard earned cash.
- How much power are you expecting out of your setup?
- Plans for a surge tank?
- Is your car of choice prone to fuel surge?
- Are you using it for motorsport?
- Pump gas or E85 fuel?
- Whats your budget?
Injectors
This is once choice you want to make only once due to the cost of upgrading, and if its midway through a tune it means your tuner has to start from scratch which makes it so important to get right first time. We prefer the Injector Dynamics range of injectors for most applications, as they have proven to be so much better, coping with high fuel pressures, excellent low duty cycle control, and great atomisation then the older style injectors. EG SARD, DENSO etc.
Fuel System stages.
Street stage 1, This is the most common upgrade done in street cars when you start modifying from stock. Ok for stock ECU. There may be some extras required depending on individual setups
- Walbro or DS200 intank fuel pump
- Fuel pump rewired to 14v
- New fuel filter
- Sard, Tomei fuel pressure regulator (may be required if your injectors are a little bit too small)
Street stage 2, This is the next step, often required when upgrading the turbo
- Walbro, DW200 or DW300 intank fuel pump
- Fuel pump rewired to 14v
- New Fuel filter
- Larger injectors
- Sard, Tomei fuel pressure regulator (recommended with ID1000cc injectors to make full use of 3D injector dead time table chart)
- Street stage 3, This is the finial stage of upgrades for a highly worked street car with out a surge tank
- DW300, or Bosch 044 pump intank
- Fuel pump rewired to 14v
- New Fuel filter
- Larger injectors
- Sard, Tomei fuel pressure regulator (recommended with ID1000cc injectors to make full use of 3D injector dead time table chart)
Motorsport stage 1 (Street stage 4)
The most common upgrade for cars used in motorsport as it eliminates fuel surge and provides a good base for future modifications, with the single Bosch 044 providing enough fuel flow for over 440kw on E85 on an RB30DET
- Bosch 044 external fuel pump
- Lift pump, Stock, or Walbro 500hp
- 2ltr+ surge tank
- New Fuel filters
- Larger injectors
- Sard, Tomei fuel pressure regulator (recommended with ID1000cc injectors to make full use of 3D injector dead time table chart)
Motorsport, Stage 2, This setup is good for over 700hp at the wheels, while holding solid fuel pressure, even under 35psi of boost pressure.
- Twin Bosch 044 fuel pumps
- Lift pump, Walbro 500hp, DW200 or DW300
- 2nd 5/16th fuel line (you can T both pumps in to one larger line)
- 2ltr+ surge tank
- New Fuel filters
- Larger injectors
- Sard, aeromotive, Tomei Fuel pressure regulator. Needs to be large due to the amount of fuel it will have to bypass
